We go through an incredible process growing a baby. We then go through child birth and start the process of breastfeeding. I feel as if we are more or less sent on our merry way at our 6 week check up.
.
For 9mths we’re monitored so carefully then once the baby’s out things flip. Suddenly all appointments are for the baby’s health.
.
We have changed bodies, changed roles. Many women have scare tissue, some have birth trauma, pelvic instability issues, and sometimes prolapses.
.
I say this not to scare new first time mums going into birth. I say it to acknowledge that far greater support is needed as we navigate this postpartum path.
.
“Is it normal to have no sex drive?” “Is it normal to have pain months after childbirth?” “How do I go from mother to lover?” These are just some of the most common questions that have been raised.
.
Sex after a baby is big for couples and I hope to open this discussion right up. Rachel shares the birth of her little boy Hugo.
.
Very early on in her pregnancy, whist working interstate, Rachel noticed she was bleeding. Panicked she called her GP and was unable to get onto him. The receptionist said it sounded like a miscarriage and told her to head to the nearest hospital. When Rachel saw the doctor they refused to give her an ultrasound instead they took her blood to check her HCG levels.
.
Rachel flew back home to be with her partner unsure if she was losing the baby or not. Her partner called every ultrasound clinic he could to find and eventually booked them a last minute Saturday morning appointment. After a sleepless night they made their way in and as soon as the doctor put the gel on her belly and put the ultrasound on they heard a very strong heart beat. The doctor said she had probably just had an implantation bleed.
.
At no point over the previous 24hours had any one suggested implantation bleeding or the possibility that her pregnancy could still be ok.
.
You can hear the rest of Rachel’s pregnancy experience and birth in this week’s episode.
